Daniel Madison Poker and Blackjack Lessons on advantage play

What Is Advantage Play in Poker and Blackjack? Inside Daniel Madison’s Expert Card Table Course – Module Two

ADVANTAGE PLAY - MODULE TWO

After laying the foundations in Module One, the second chapter of How to Become the Expert at the Card Table moves into one of the most misunderstood — and most powerful — areas of serious gambling education: advantage play.

In Module Two: Advantage Play, Daniel Madison explores what happens when you stop trying to force outcomes at the table and instead learn to recognise the opportunities that already exist. This video post accompanies Module Two of Madison’s 12-part course and offers a practical look at how advantage play works in both poker and blackjack, with demonstrations, real-world stories, and professional insight.

Advantage play is not about cheating. It is, as Madison describes it, the art of awareness — paying close enough attention to identify naturally occurring opportunities before you ever need to initiate deceptive play. In fact, one of the key lessons in this module comes from Madison’s own experience: after years spent mastering deceptive techniques, he often arrived at card tables only to realise that flaws in procedure, handling, or environment made those techniques unnecessary.

This module covers how advantage players think, what they look for, and how small details compound into meaningful edges over time. Position play is a major theme — choosing the right seat at the table and understanding how that position affects what you can see, track, and infer. Madison also explores hand and eye reading, along with physical flaws in cards and decks such as dog-eared corners and natural crimps that subtly change how a deck behaves.

Using SHARPS Playing Cards, Module Two also introduces edge reading, edge sorting, and shuffle tracking — the ability to follow key cards through a deck as it is shuffled. These are skills rooted in observation rather than manipulation, and they form a crucial bridge between fair play and more advanced techniques covered later in the course.

For blackjack players, the module builds towards card counting using the Balanced system, commonly known as Hi-Lo or +/–.

To support this, the lesson is accompanied by a dedicated video contribution from Houston Curtis, a Las Vegas legend who provides a clear and practical introduction to card counting fundamentals. His perspective adds real-world grounding to the theory, making the concepts accessible without watering them down. Watch here:

At over two hours long, Module Two is deliberately dense. Madison encourages viewers to take notes, revisit sections, and practise with a deck in hand. This is not passive learning — it is training.

For readers interested in going deeper into this subject beyond the video, Madison Cards is currently offering the e-book Advantage Players by Michael Kaplan. The book provides additional context around professional gambling, advantage play, and the mindset required to operate successfully in real casino environments, making it an excellent companion to this module.

This post sits within Madison’s wider 12-part course, How to Become the Expert at the Card Table. While Module One focused on rules, structure, and correct handling, Module Two marks the shift into applied awareness — the point where knowledge starts turning into usable edge.

The full Module Two tutorial video is available to purchase on Madison Cards, either as a standalone module or as part of the complete 12-module course. Like Module One, all content is available on demand, 24/7, and can also be accessed via The Madison Library or The Sleight Club, depending on how you prefer to study.

Prefer to learn alone? The Madison Library offers self-paced access to over 50 video masterclasses, 10 downloadable books, and two complete courses — How to Become the Expert at the Card Table and The Magic Induction. There’s no obligation, and access is available for a simple monthly fee.

Module Two is where the course begins to sharpen its edge. Module Three follows next, continuing the journey deeper into expert-level play and deceptive practices to be aware of.
